Best Athletes
Male - Mario Moore
Female - Erica Grimaldi
We know what sport Vandy students pay the most attention to, as both Mario and Erica do their work in Memorial Gym. Moore led the Commodores in scoring this year with 13.5 points per game. Erica is a guard for the Lady Commodores and was the emotional rock for a team that has played well in the NCAA Tournament the past two years.
Worst Hustler Opinion Columnist - Michael Wilt
Like inflammatory, divisive commentary that draws the ire of many readers? Wilt had you covered. Wilt also served as the Monday opinion page editor this year, so you can thank him for Mike Matthews II and Max Kuperman as well. Interestingly, Evan Mayor placed second, but he was the editor in the fall, not an opinion columnist ...
Best Place to Park - G-spot
Somehow, I think that this category was misinterpreted. But who doesn't enjoy parking at the G-spot? Just make sure you're not parallel parking... umm, not that I know or anything. Other actual parking suggestions included the Student Health Center, 25th Avenue, and behind Logan's. The most sadistic reply said Harris-Hillman, but be rest assured that anyone who parks there illegally is probably going to hell (hey, when you need a parking spot, you need a parking spot).
Favorite Religious Group - Victory Campus Ministries
VCM had increased their visibility on campus with many events such as the coffeehouse at the beginning of the school year and the Shadows of the Supernatural presentation featuring Nails Magic. VCM members likely form the most diverse student group on campus during their weekly meeting in the Black Cultural Center at 7:30 on Wednesday nights. The Vanderbilt Pagan Society placed second in the voting, and they have certainly made their presence felt in their first year on campus.
Best Study Abroad Spot - China
The most popular place, according to voters, to study abroad is China. Australia follows in a close second place. There are several different programs in various cities, such as Beijing, Nanjing, and Peking, in China that students may choose to study in. Also a positive, yummy Chinese food! Mmmm. Studying abroad is a common experience for many Vanderbilt undergraduates. Students may also choose to study in Europe, Asia, South Pacific, South America, the Caribbean, and Mexico.
Best Vanderbilt Scandal - Freshmen Sex Video
What would college life be like without scandal and gossip? From arrests, to secret hazings, to unsanitary dining halls, the best scandal goes to the freshman homemade video. The talk of the school for months, the famous video turns out not to be so scandalous; embarrassing maybe, but not so much scandalous, as it appeared to be just innocent fun...maybe. Nonetheless, it remains the best scandal and disturbingly, circulating it has become a pasttime for our lovely Vandy boys. Two thumbs up for the star of this dance video!
Most Forgotten Minority - Midgets
Stand tall, midgets, because you won most forgotten minority! Maybe if you all formed an intramural basketball team you would get more recognition. Sailors finished second in this category, but who cares? They were stupid enough to go to a university that is landlocked ... but I hear there is good sailing on the Cumberland.
Best Vandy Fashion - Uggs
The Eskimo look was in this year! The infamous Ugg boots have swept Vanderbilt campus this year. Amongst colorful Polos, plaid shorts, and pearls, Uggs became the trademark shoes of the majority of girls on campus, beating moccasins by a landslide. These luxurious fleece-lined boots range in colors from pink, to blue, to brown, to the ever so popular tan. Interestingly enough, although students voted Uggs as best Vandy fashion, some students may have been confused by the meaning of "best," as several voters added "Uggs=Ugly" onto their ballot. You may love 'em or hate 'em, but these boots are here to stay, at least until some other interesting trend comes along next year.
Staff Raves...
- To Vanderbilt Dining and the Card Office for finally getting some restaurants outside of the university to accept the Vandy Card. However, dining never allows any opportunity to screw people over pass by, so every person who purchases a meal plan must put in 200 bucks of Taste of Nashville money.
- I've had some nice college-girl epiphanies. Looking forward to many more. Also, Febreze rocks.
- New Studio Arts Building. It's about freaking time. Too bad it has to compete with the Student Life Center, I mean the New-Office-Space-for-Post-Graduate-Student-Life-Services-next-to-a-big-Ballroom-for-less-than-Bimonthly-Student-Activities Center. Seriously, it's about time the university built a building that not only looks awesome but will be used everyday, all day and into most nights. Congratulations, one out of two ain't bad (unless you're spending millions of dollars on each of them... wait.)
- Beta Upsilon Chi for throwing one kick-a$$ Island Party on Wilson Lawn, despite very un-island-like weather.
- For all the men, I'd like to thank the women of Vanderbilt for the first days of spring.
- The new Freshman Commons plan. Glad to see some forward progress to improve housing on campus and the elimination of alienation amongst the freshman.
-The Mayfield 8 boys for parties. You made the frats an alternative.
- Rites of Spring committee for bringing us Cake!
- Grins for the little slice of heaven that is the vegan chocolate chip cookie. *sigh* Thank you.
- Renovation and expansion of the Bishop Joseph Johnson Black Cultural Center, aka the BJJBCC. Say that three times fast.
-The Vanderbilt Hustler for actually trying have journalistic intertrigy. Whereas, we just write . . . yeah.
-To the hottest newspaper editor I met in New York, the kadayif!
Staff Rants...
- People who leave their beer cans and bottles in front of Branscomb and in the Towers elevators. It's not that hard to throw them in the trash, so why don't you put them there instead of throwing them on the ground and making the grounds crew pick up hundreds of cans every weekend?
- The Vanderbubble. The real world goes on without us.
- Vanderbilt Traffic and Parking for selling parking permits based on parking availability prior to the building of the Studio Arts building (equivalent to the loss of around 100 parking spaces), AND then proceeding to give us parking tickets for parking illegally (because we had a choice?)
- The massive reconstruction of Buttrick, for completely screwing up my route to class this year. Dang it.
- The extremely slow elevators in Morgan, for conspiring to make me at least 5 minutes late to class every Monday and Wednesday.
- People who try to get into an elevator before allowing those inside to exit. What are they thinking? If the elevator is opening on the ground floor, and there are people inside, there's a great possibility that those people are gonna need to get out...so why the heck are you trying to enter before we can exit? Why?!?
- Classes with labs. All of them.
- Sad to see that the true campus center after Freshman Commons is built will be somewhere in the third or fourth lane of 21st avenue, between the library and CVS.
- Rites of Spring commitee for charging us to see Cake. Damnit, I want to have my Cake and eat it too... for free.
- Student LIFE center? If student life is supposed to center around a monthly or semiannual ball for about a tenth of campus, then we've succeeded. However, I always imagined student life to center around chilling with current friends and making new ones in a stimulating atmosphere; preferably with tasty food, satisfying drink, and exciting entertainment. Oh, and on a weekly, if not daily, basis. It'd also help if my academic life (aka studying) were in someway enhanced by a student "life" center.
-The dance routines @ the basketball games during halftime. im not sure if anyone else has noticed or cared, and i do respect the licesne to artistic freedom and creativity, but i am thinking they are less and less school spirit-themed (especially during the NIT games with the lack of our colors being present).
